We announced in February that we have made some awesome updates to our Leadership program!
Campers will have the opportunity to be a part of a unique 4-year LIFE PROGRAM that prepares campers to flourish in all areas of their life. The young adults who complete this program will have practiced valuable skills that they can apply to attending college, employment, extracurricular activities, living independently, and becoming a respected leader in their community. Our goal is to convert the young adults in the Leadership Program into Community Builders. It will be divided into three categories, Personal Growth, Life Skills, and Professional Skills. Participants in the leadership program will give input on the topics they will learn.
We are excited to share that over 20 campers have already applied to be a part of the program this summer! A huge part of the 1st year of the Leadership Program is about finding “your style” when it comes to Leadership. Not all campers are the same and all our campers will lead in different ways, here at camp and in the real world.
We asked our LITs if there is more than 1 type of leader, if one was inherently worse than another, and this is what they had to say…
“There are many different types of leaders and different leaders are better for different situations. For example leaders who take charge and get stuff done might be necessary for a project oriented group, while a leader who listens and is really good at encouraging other people’s ideas would be good for a community based group. So not one type of leader is better than another, it all depends on the situation, and who that leader is.”– Claire K.
“I feel like there’s one type of leader that works with a big group of people and then there is another type of leader that gets to work with a small group of people. I think that the small group leader is more beneficial because they help you have individualized learning and are more fit to you specifically“– Annie G.
“Yes there are people that lead by fear and those who lead by inspiration. Leading by inspiration is better because if you inspire the people you lead they will most likely cooperate with you then if they were to be afraid of you.“– Joel C.
“There is definitely more than one type of leader; but the best leader is someone who actually leads, who takes charge in any situation and is able to coordinate and benefit a group through their leading. A good leader is someone you can go to when you are struggling or when there is conflict, and they will do their best to resolve any conflict and fulfill everyone’s needs. Even if you aren’t in a place of authority, you can still be a good leader. If you are in a place of authority, you can still be a bad leader.“– Lydia A.
“Yes, there are “loud” leaders and “quiet” leaders. Loud leaders tend to be energetic and vocal. Quiet leaders lead by their example. No leader is better than another, because the quiet leaders will be more influential to the quieter kids, and the loud leaders will be more influential to the louder kids.”– Aidan F.
“Yes, there is more than one type of leader. Most leaders have different traits, such as being more communicative, empathetic, or decisive. Some leaders have bad traits, such as being very strict or not communicating, which would make them not as good of a leader. Leaders should also adjust to what they are doing and to different situations, so in some cases being more strict might be a good thing. Every leader also has different ways of leading, and that can be good or bad.“– Klara H.
These campers have already taken the first step in their journey to becoming true community builders! Keep checking in to the blog, we’ll be adding more updates and insights from the new program as summer unfolds. It’s not too late to apply to be a part of this amazing group of young leaders!
