Having been around for almost 97 years, we have amassed our fair share of traditions here at Foley. We asked our campers which traditions they hold close to their heart and can’t wait to recreate this summer…
“My favorite camp tradition is treehouses! I love getting to spend time with my cabinmates and to be able to just hang out, cook those pizza pies, and make rice krispies is the best! I love how we all just get to laugh together and tell stories around a campfire and play games! It is one of the best things about camp.” – Nora Boyd(16) current camper
Tree houses are a major favorite of our campers and for good reason, they are so much fun! Cabin groups will get to hike out to one of our beautiful campsites and spend the night in a treehouse. Campers will cook dinner and dessert over a fire and spend quality time out surrounded by nature. For the first time this year, every camper will get to go to the treehouses this summer.
“Friendship Campfire is probably my favorite. I like everyone getting their badges or watching a person getting the anchor award because it’s a great accomplishment. It’s fun seeing how long everyone has been to Foley, that’s why I like everyone getting their badges. Watching everyone stand up and talking about their camp experience from the past two weeks is cool.”- Robby McMahon(15) current camper
Friendship Campfire is a very special time in the camp session. It takes place at the end of the session, and separate events are held for boys and girls. This is one of the only times we split the camp down the line by gender. By doing this, we allow campers to get comfortable and reflect on the friendships they have made over the course of the camp session. The campfire always ends with s’mores and the giving out of the Anchor Award. This award goes to one boy and one girl in each session, who exemplify what it means to be a true Foley Camper. This person is voted on by the staff and given out by previous anchor winners.
“I love late night adventure! We are all staying up late and playing games we almost never get to play. It’s fun to hang out with your friends and watch the stars or have a late night camp fire. I have really great memories of the camp dance too, that usually happens on the same day as late night adventure. I always look forward to that night at camp.” – Jeff Rumpf(16) current camper
Late Night Adventure is a fun filled night that occurs half way through the session. It happens after our first 3 days of activities, and is always exciting for campers because it is a night where they can stay up a bit later than normal. Campers have gotten to attend a Grand Dance Festival, played glow in the dark frisbee and soccer, and gone on night hikes and hosted late night campfires. Late Night Adventure this summer will include our famous Flick N Float, where campers all sit in boats and on the dock of the Marina and watch a movie that is projected on the back white wall of the Marina.
These are just some of the many traditions we celebrate throughout camp. This summer, campers will get to be a part of their favorite Foley traditions. Also with the changes we have made to our sessions, these 3 week sessions give us all an extra week of camp, and we are hoping the campers create new traditions that we can bring with us into the coming years.
